Skype, SIP, 3rd Party VoIP – Interop

Dan York has a piece on why Skype should allow third-party interop on Skype. Kind of plays into what my new-co is looking in to getting done in future.

AT&T Goes after Skype and other cheap VoIP Players

I was surprised this announcement didn’t get more play in the blogosphere today. My Take: AT&T announced today that they are willing to cannibalize their landline business to stop new players like Skype from killing their business for them.Thats a pretty big declaration on their part that they see the threat of the new players and are willing to take them on in the pricing realm. What AT&T really announced was that they will give their customers a “75 percent in discounts for international rates on phone calls carried out via its VoIP-based CallVantage Softphone Service.”In other words: You use the landline – you pay 100%. You use their soft-client – from Counterpath – you pay 25%.This is a clear attempt to be competitive with Skype and the other softphone based companies. It also clearly pushes their customers to use the online client to get cost savings. In some ways this may prompt them to try other vendors when in the past they had resisted. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Jon’s Phone Tool – New Release – Great Tool.

If you use a Mac and use Softphones (counterpath, Skype, gizmo etc) you probably now how lacking in features these programs are when it come to integration into you mac software. For example – importing contacts from entourage/ Address-book into Skype means an unwieldily contact list is created. It imported some 600 contacts of mine (usually with two numbers each) which means some 1200 names! and skype in all its wisdom doesn’t add the work, mobile or home designation so you’re essentially calling blind to which number you’re using. Its a pain, its unuseable and even if you try this out and decide to delete them Skype only allows you delete one at a time (1200 Contacts #!$!) the latest version just won’t do mass deletes (that I could find.) Enter Jon’s phone tool which I’ve been using for nearly a year now which eliminates all these issues and brings contact integration for softphones to a level only seen on PC’s (and in almost all cases exceeds the PC version!)Jon’s Phone tool essentially replaces the interface of your softclient and allows you to setup tons of ways to connect to people over softphones. Its a great tool for people & I highly recommend it.

Until SkypeIn Canada Arrives – Try this!

Waiting for SkypeIN for Canadian Numbers? Can’t wait? You can try DID World Wide.Which is currently beta testing its own way of employing a SkypeIn. This should also remind people that there is little to no reason why Skype can’t provide a solution for their Canadian Users. At $5 a months, and with Skype out at $30 US for a year of unlimited service this is a pretty cheap way of implementing a replacement landline. (though it never should for e911 reason ;) )

SkypeIn Canada: Launching Next Month?

Chalk this up to a rumor I’ve heard indirectly through the ITSP grapevine. Turns out that Skype is going to (finally) launch its SkypeIN service within Canada.According to my contact (who doesn’t work there) several problems seem to have hit Skype while trying to launch this, including e911 issues, the fact that they were bought by eBay, CRTC changes, and the fact that number portability is in the cards.Do I believe all these excuses….. not really. But I do trust the sources as he’s someone who does have some access to the ITSPs.These supposed problems may also point to why when calling from Vonage to 1800 numbers they register you as residing in the states. Not sure. But here’s hoping all those users who have been clammering for the Candian numbers can get them.

SkypeOut now FREE for US & Canada!

Wow! Just wow!How the heck is Bell Canada, Vonage or anyone else north of the border supposed to compete with this?read more | digg story
