This morning saw the announcement that Watchfire, an Ottawa based company that was founded by a team that included Mike Weider and an old friend Andrew Rolleston, was acquired by IBM.I know Watchfire (indirectly I own some very early shares) and the team behind it from their earlier involvement in an startup called Quadrillion (an NRC spinout) and my Dad helped raised their angel round in what was then Tetranet, that was about 10 years ago.For IBM this is a good fit:

Watchfire technology will extend IBM’s governance and risk management strategy, with broad security and compliance capabilities integrated into the software development lifecycle. Watchfire with IBM Rational software will help customers integrate web application security and compliance early on and throughout the software development process. As a result, customers will now be able to define, test and track the compliance of their applications with security, legal and corporate requirements.

Financial details have not been released. Congrats to Mike, Andrew and the entire Watchfire Team!

  1. Can you guess (just in terms of order of magnitude) what the sales price would have been?

I don’t have any visibility on the buyout. I have a broad sense of what the sales were, I’d expect it was over $125 Million. Obviously, it will come out in a circular in few weeks/months time.
